Can I be a Leader?

I love your writings. I’m a seminary student at Seminary X. I want to be a leader in the church, but I struggle with so much – Scripture, homosexuality, exclusivism, etc. Do you think I can be a leader when I struggle so much?

Maybe, maybe not. If your struggles paralyze you, you won’t be able to lead, because by definition, a leader is going somewhere.

If your struggles motivate you – put you in motion to seek, learn, serve, experiment, persevere, pray, repent, listen, etc. – they could be your greatest qualification for ministry.

In my book “Finding Faith,” I talk about 4 stages of faith development. It sounds like you may be in “Stage 3: Perplexity.” This is a necessary season that can lead to a fourth stage where profound ministry can flow.

May God help you grow through these struggles and trials, so you become a fertile and mature leader in God’s church, for the good of the world!
